OH MY GOD THERE’S MORE
ok theres no way this works
might as well try it anyway
here goes
nope nope nope not doin that shit
in retrospect i should have learned from those who came before me
Recently, after class, I would spar with the focus on improving my guard technique, transitions, escapes, and maintaining top position with some application of submission holds (mostly looking for chokes). I feel my guard game should be better than where it is now. On the other hand, I’ve been sharpening my transitions and escapes. The repetitive drilling and the fixation of applying my knowledge of these aspects of ground fighting has helped me understand how certain techniques work. I won’t directly aim for the submission because that isn’t my focus, but when the opportunity arises, I will attempt it.
Wise words! Sparring with a goal in mind is vital for success!!
And no that’s not it! The flower sweep is an awesome move in BJJ and judo that helps reverse the position to get you on top from your guard!
Its high percentage, powerful and has a few variations. I’ve been taught the sweep a few times and while the major details seem to remain the same the use/placement of the leghand seems to change. Some people like to underhook the leg with their arm like so:
Others prefer to grip the pant leg near the ankle and use that instead. Choosing to push out with their arm as part of the sweep. Like so:
Both work great and it’s a matter of take what you can get. I use the leg grip when I’m in the gi because it feels stronger and is easier for me to push them over. plus I feel the pant leg grip has a lot less risk if you don’t end up getting the sweep.
That being said in No gi you HAVE to go with the underhook to do your flower sweep.
The under the leg grip works even with the gi at the highest levels.
A good way to set it up would be
“ Break their posture during an arm drag, reach around their back and grab their lat to keep the posture broken and the arm trapped in the drag. Grab pant with other hand and perform the sweep.”
I have GREAT success with this gift wrap set up. So try out the flower sweep and tell me if you like it. Do you have any tips for the flower sweep?
